Te Kauwhata - New World Supermarket

New World Te Kauwhata is a new supermarket development and one of the early implementations of a smaller-format store concept for Foodstuffs.

The project required careful coordination of structure, building services, refrigeration systems, and supermarket fit-out elements, along with tightly sequenced commissioning to meet store opening requirements.

PJM provided project management, Engineer to the Contract, and contract administration services, working with the client, design team, and contractor from design coordination through to construction and handover. PJM’s role included programme management, cost control, contract administration, and coordination of specialist supermarket trades and suppliers.

Delivery required detailed sequencing to integrate the base build works with refrigeration, shelving, checkouts, and specialist equipment installation, as well as careful planning around testing and commissioning.

Designed by Wingate Architects, the store adopts a market-style layout focused on customer experience, using contrasting forms and natural materials to create a welcoming and practical retail environment.

The completed store delivers a high-quality, efficient supermarket that reflects the Foodstuffs brand and provides a strong retail and community asset for Te Kauwhata.
